About the Internship
We are recruiting student interns from area colleges and universities for this spring and/or summer 2002 on a credit or non-credit basis, as the intern prefers (students potentially interested in summer positions should call for more information). These positions are unpaid. Interns can invest as few as 6 hours per week and as many as 40 hours, depending on credit load and desired involvement. Credit interns must secure a sponsoring professor then fulfill whatever academic requirements that professor may require for the credit, e.g., a final evaluative or research paper, weekly journal entries, bi-weekly progress meetings with the professor, and/or else.
During the internship, interns will have an onsite supervisor, generally the campaign manager, with whom the interns will meet once every 1-2 weeks specifically to go over work progress, answer any questions, and plan for the following weeks.
As with all campaign staff, interns will be involved in a range of activities from the simple to the more complex. Some of these activities students may engage in during their campaign internship include:
- writing letters-to-the editor of local newspapers on campaign issues;
- designing and printing campaign literature;
- participating in and/or recruiting volunteers for tabling, phone-banking, mailings and other campaign work;
- organizing campaign social and fundraising events;
- participating in and/or running neighborhood literature drops.
Regardless of an intern's activities, she/he will likely work with one or more campaign staff on a regular basis, attend campaign, Green Party and/or public meetings, and carry out independent work.
Expectations
Interns must be willing and able to work 6 to 40 hours a week, depending on commitment level. Interns are expected to take their internship seriously, and to carry out their work promptly and effectively. Accordingly, our campaign seeks students who are hard working, highly motivated, interested in grassroots electoral politics, and dedicated to social justice. Prior political experience is a plus, but not required.
